A Continuous Charity is honored to support a remarkable Muslim convert and PhD candidate whose work brings light to the long-buried histories of resistance and resilience in the Ummah.
This graduate student at the Graduate Theological Union is dedicating her dissertation to the hidden legacy of the Moriscos—Muslims in Spain who were forcibly converted to Christianity between 1492 and 1502, yet continued to preserve Islam in secret for over two centuries. Her research reveals the sumud (steadfastness) of Muslims who refused to let their faith be erased, even under violent persecution.
This work is not just historical—it’s a mirror. From the Moriscos to modern-day Palestine, her project connects systems of oppression across centuries, challenging dominant narratives and amplifying the silenced voices of our global Ummah.
Her Story:
Raised in a Jewish household in the Bay Area, she accepted Islam in 2007 after questioning the narratives surrounding Zionism and engaging deeply with Muslim peers and professors at UC Berkeley. Diagnosed later in life with ADHD and Asperger’s, she brings not only deep empathy but also a neurodivergent and cross-cultural lens to her academic work. For her, this isn’t just scholarship—it’s a form of jihad through knowledge and truth-telling.
