Khursheed Begum and Jan Muhammad Khokhar Charitable Legacy Fund

Supporting the Higher Education of Medical and Dental Students Through Qard Hasan Interest-Free Loans

“When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.”

(Sahih Muslim, 1631)

A Legacy Rooted in Faith, Education, and Service

Prof. Dr. Nasir Khokhar was born into a middle-class family and studied in a rural environment. Through hard work and perseverance, he went on to become a doctor. In 1975, he came to the United States, trained, and practiced medicine for several years before returning to Pakistan to fulfill a vision to establish a medical institution that would serve the community.

That vision became Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, where Dr. Khokhar served nearly 30 years as a Gastroenterologist, caring for patients and mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals.

In 2021, he returned to the United States to be close to his four children. But his heart carried a lifelong desire to leave behind Sadaqa-e-Jaria (continuous charity) that would benefit others long after his lifetime.

When he learned about A Continuous Charity (ACC) at an APPNA meeting in Washington, D.C., the mission resonated deeply with him. Dr. Khokhar decided to establish a charitable trust in honor of his beloved late parents, Khursheed Begum and Jan Muhammad Khokhar, to support the higher education of Muslim students in the fields of medicine and dentistry.

This fund provides Qard Hasan interest-free educational loans, ensuring that capable and driven students can complete their education without the burden of riba (interest). Dr. Khokhar plans to continue adding to the fund throughout his life, leaving it as part of his legacy when he returns to Allah — with the hope of presenting it as a deed on the Day of Judgment.

Why Medical and Dental Students?

Medical and dental students face some of the highest educational costs. Yet, they hold the potential to heal communities, save lives, and uplift the Ummah through their service. By investing in their education, this fund plants seeds of beneficial knowledge (‘ilm naafi’) that will continue to bear fruit for generations.

“And establish prayer and give zakah, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:110)

How This Fund Works

  1. Established in partnership with A Continuous Charity (ACC) to provide Qard Hasan (interest-free educational loans) to eligible Muslim medical and dental students.
  2. Students repay the loans after graduation, and the funds are re-loaned to new students — creating a cycle of continuous charity.
  3. 100% of donations go directly to students.

Your Role in This Legacy

Donors can be part of this ongoing charity by contributing to the Khursheed Begum and Jan Muhammad Khokar Charitable Legacy Fund. Every gift helps aspiring Muslim medical and dental students pursue their calling without the weight of interest-bearing debt.

The impact is profound — helping a student become a doctor or dentist means enabling them to care for thousands of patients throughout their career. Every heartbeat, every recovery, every life saved becomes part of the donor’s reward (ajr).

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)
